Cornelia Maude Spelman Evanston writer Cornelia Maude Spelman's picture books promote the social and emotional development of young children, and are recommended by state agencies, schools, pediatricians, libraries, parenting groups, social service agencies, state child abuse and disaster training agencies, and special needs parents and educators. They've been featured on PBS and network TV and have won awards including "Best Children's Books of the Year" from the Children's Book Committee of Bank Street College, and the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Award. Several have been used for Scholastic book clubs, and some have been translated into Chinese, Spanish, Korean, Arabic, German, and Greek.

Reviewers judge her books to be "gentle," "sensitive," "reassuring," and "compassionate and understanding." Cornelia is a former clinical social worker. Her "The Way I Feel" series includes WHEN I FEEL ANGRY (illustrated by Nancy Cote), WHEN I FEEL SCARED, WHEN I CARE ABOUT OTHERS, WHEN I FEEL SAD, WHEN I FEEL GOOD ABOUT MYSELF, WHEN I FEEL JEALOUS, AND WHEN I MISS YOU (illustrated by Kathy Parkinson). She is also the author of YOUR BODY BELONGS TO YOU (illustrated by Terri Weidner), MAMA AND DADDY BEAR'S DIVORCE (illustrated by Kathy Parkinson) and AFTER CHARLOTTE' S MOM DIED (illustrated by Judith Friedman). All books are published by Albert Whitman & Co.

WHEN I MISS YOU amd WHEN I FEEL SCARED are also being published in September, 2010 as board book editions.

In Cornelia's school visits she reads her books about feeling angry and sad via a slide show, talks with children about their feelings and how to manage them. She offers staff/parent workshops on helping children manage emotions. Contact her via email with inquiries.
