Sara Shacter
Sara Shacter remembers the summer her siblings entered her as
a Pet Nuisance in her hometown's Fourth of July Pet Parade. She's come a long
way since then.
After ten years as an English teacher, Sara was drawn to the world of
children's writing by her respect for her students and her love of a
good story. She is a picture book author (HEADING TO THE WEDDING, Red Rock Press), and her nonfiction has appeared in World Book's 2003
and 2004 Childcraft Annuals, as well as in several magazines,
including Click, Highlights for Children, ASK:
Arts and Science for Kids, and YES Mag: Canada's Science
Magazine for Kids. She also served as a contributing editor for
World Book's 2003 Childcraft Annual and the debut issue of
ASK. In addition, Sara has written teacher's guides for Chicago's
Museum of Science and Industry, covering topics such as AIDS and the
science behind science fiction. She lives in Chicago.
PRESENTATIONS:
An Author's Life (grades

Students are put on the trail of a hot story. Topics can include creating
catchy headlines, writing for different audiences, honing research skills, and
perfecting interview techniques.
Create a Monster or an Aardvark or… (grades K-8)

each student will develop a main character to star in a work of fiction.

Are your students ready to write engaging autobiographies? Compelling
persuasive essays? I am happy to craft a writing experience tailored to your
specific curriculum goals.
