Karen Halvorsen Schreck is the author of the young adult novel, Dream Journal, (Hyperion, September 2006, ages 12 and up), and the award-winning children’s book, Lucy's Family Tree (Tilbury House 2000, ages 6 and up). She received her MA in Creative Writing and English from SUNY Binghamton and her doctorate in Creative Writing and English from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her short fiction for adults has appeared in Other Voices, Literal Latté, and New American Fiction, among other journals, and she is a recipient of a Pushcart Prize, a New American Fiction Award, and an Illinois State Arts Council Grant. She has taught Creative Writing, Composition, and Literature at SUNY Binghamton, the University of Illinois, and Wheaton College. For grades two through five, Karen offers “Finding Your Story,” which begins with a description of how she found one of her own stories, Lucy's Family Tree. Students then embark on a series of fun and fruitful writing exercises to help them discover the stories they’d like to read or need to tell. In exploring this territory, they’ll also learn about the elements of fiction. A question-and-answer session will follow. Karen adapts “Finding Your Story” to middle grade and high school tastes by including a discussion of her young adult novel Dream Journal—its revision and publication process. Aided by exercises, students then generate new work. Those who are interested may read what they’ve written aloud, the better to appreciate their voices and consider where they might take their work next. Karen also gives presentations for teachers and librarians. For information on how she can create a workshop that meets your needs, please contact her via email or her web site. Contact Information:
