Nnedi Okorafor-Mbachu Nnedi Okorafor-Mbachu’s debut novel, Zahrah the Windseeker, a gripping fantasy tale set in a place like Nigeria, was published in 2005 by Houghton Mifflin. A partially illustrated version will be published in Nigeria by Kachifo Ltd. Zahrah the Windseeker was shortlisted for the Parallax, Kindred and Golden Duck Awards in 2006. It was also nominated for a Locus Award (Best First Novel, 2005) and Garden State Teen Book Award (pending, 2008).

Her second novel, The Shadow Speaker, a YA fantasy novel (with elements of science fiction) that takes place in the West African country of Niger, will be published by Hyperion Books for Children (Jump at the Sun) in October 2007.

Ursula K. Le Guin has said: “There’s more vivid imagination in a page of The Shadow Speaker than in whole volumes of ordinary fantasy epics.” Diana Wynne Jones also commented, “The Shadow Speaker is wonderful, highly original stuff, episode after amazing episode, full of color, life and death. I think this book is MARVELOUS.”

Nnedi is a prolific writer and has also written memoir pieces, scripts for plays and film, critical essays, and several award-winning short stories, essays. She has written a tech/web opinions column for the Star Newspapers titled “Nnedi on the Net” for nearly a decade.

Nnedi has been featured on BET Nightly News and published journalistically in USA Today.com, and Essence Magazine. She holds a BA in rhetoric, an MA in journalism, and a PhD in English. She is also a graduate of the Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers’ Workshop. Nnedi resides in the south Chicago suburbs with her daughter, Anyaugo, and family and is a professor at Governor’s State University.
