“Upbeat, energizing, and engaging, W. Nikola-Lisa brings text to life with music, story and theater. He captures the audience and takes them on a journey into the creation and life of his books. An exceptional children's author who hooks students into the reading and writing process.”--Jenny Wojcik, Superintendent, Rondout School District, Rondout, Illinois. W. Nikola-Lisa's interest in writing picture books for children began when he was an elementary school teacher in the early 1980s. His first book, Night Is Coming (Dutton) was published in 1991. Since then he has published twenty books, including Bein' With You This Way (Lee & Low), Shake Dem Halloween Bones (Houghton Mifflin), The Year with Grandma Moses (Henry Holt), and Setting the Turkeys Free (Hyperion). His latest book How We Are Smart, published by Lee & Low Books, presents the poetic profiles of twelve men and women. Each profile is accompanied by an introductory quotation and a paragraph of information text. Along with classroom activities, the book provides the intermediate grade teacher with a host of book, video and website resources on multiple intelligences. School Library Journal called it a “creative blend of poetry, biography, and psychology.” When Mr. Nikola-Lisa is not writing, he is usually at schools, public libraries, and state and national conferences where he shares his unique blend of music, storytelling, and humor.
