Weezie Kerr Mackey
Former high school and college coach and player Weezie Kerr Mackey writes novels for young adults about sports, friendship, and fitting in.

She began her sports career in seventh grade and played through high school and college. After college, she took a job teaching P.E. and coaching girls’ field hockey, soccer, and softball at the Greenhill School in Dallas, Texas, which became the inspiration for Ella’s story in Throwing Like a Girl, her first novel.

Although her next young adult novel is not sports-related, she is working on another sports book, Kick, and has entertained requests for a sequel to Throwing Like a Girl.

Mackey’s school visits have included middle school creative writing and English classes, to boys and girls. (Some have been required to read the book; others have not.) The program covers varied topics. From “so you want to be a writer: how to mine and tell your story” to “getting published” to “what it’s like to be the subject of a picture book.” (Mackey’s mother, Sue Felt Kerr, wrote and illustrated five children’s books, including Here Comes Weezie and Weezie Goes to School.)

Equipped with an MFA in creative writing from American University in Washington, DC, and a million different jobs in different cities (including coaching two of the Dixie Chicks while they were in middle and high school), she now writes and lives in Wilmette, Illinois, with her husband and their two sons.
