Carol Koeller
Carol Koeller moved twenty times before she and her family settled in Chicago. Since 1995, when she acquired a permanent address and an address stamp, she’s illustrated picture books and educational material for many publications and publishers including Ladybug, Babybug, Highlights for Children, Magination Press, McGraw-Hill, Scholastic and Dutton.

Her books include Mom, Dad, Come Back Soon; Adoption: How Families are Made and How Kids Feel About It; Ah-Choo, Why I Thank You God, Nick is Sick and I Don’t Want To Clean My Room.

Carol enjoys sharing her knowledge of children’s books with children and adults in schools, libraries and other venues. She was once a preschool teacher and now has two teenagers, so she’s comfortable with a wide range of age groups. Her group presentations include visuals, props, a few tools of the trade and very possibly a rubber chicken. She likes to create drawings from audience suggestions and then provide pictures that teachers can use in later assignments. She can tailor a presentation to meet the needs of a particular group.

Workshops and Presentations

For Students

Illustrating Illustration: Carol explains how an illustration goes from blank page to finished piece.

How To Build Character(s): Carol leads groups through exercises to help young artists (and writers) develop memorable characters.

The Movie In Your Mind: Students learn how to create a book dummy, the illustrator’s rough draft.

For Adults/Teachers

See What I Mean! (Visual Literacy Basics): In this visual society, what we see often tells us as much as what we read. Carol will show you a few simple visual concepts that anyone can learn. These will help students organize their ideas and make presentations such as history or science project boards communicate more effectively.

First Writes: Practical basics of children’s book writing from crafting a story to submitting a manuscript. She will make house calls.

Visual Aids: Using illustration before you have an illustrator to help you tell your story.
