Ophelia Julien grew up in a haunted house on the north side of Chicago. She also started writing fiction somewhere in grade school, and it was then that she found that kids and the paranormal are a good mix. Always looking for mysteries, ghost stories, and unexplained phenomena in the books she read as a child, she now writes these same sorts of books as an adult. From experience in judging Young Authors stories and speaking both at Young Authors and in classroom settings, she is not alone in this interest. Programs: ”How to Build a (Scary) Story” – After
doing various school presentations, Ophelia has learned from her young
audiences that they want to know how to tell their own stories. After
a discussion about story structure, the audience is invited to help put
together their own group story, from genre and character names to settings
and endings. Participation is a key point in her presentations,
and there is always time for story swapping as well as questions and answers.
She is also, as far as she knows, the only other member of SCBWI-IL
who brings a sword as a prop on her visits! Ophelia has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois-Chicago. Professionally she has six years of writing experience for both Examiner Publications and The Daily Herald. She has also free-lanced articles for local DuPage County magazines. She teaches writing classes at Hinsdale Center for the Arts and occasionally at College of DuPage.
