Kate Hannigan
’s fascination with wordplay began in the first grade, when she heard a classmate recite a tongue twister about Peter Piper. That was the start of a love affair with language that took her to journalism school at the University of Kansas and on to join the staff of major daily newspapers like The San Francisco Chronicle and The Dallas Morning News.

After 10 years as an editor, honing the crafts of headline writing and line editing while also contributing humor columns and stories, Kate returned to her early love of children's books. She has been published in over 30 books for children, writing original stories, read-together fairy tales and adaptations of Disney classics.

In the classroom:
  • What's Your Lede? Whether in kindergarten or high school, students have stories to share and information to exchange. Creating a classroom newspaper can help students focus on the most important part of their story and how they want to convey it.
  • What Happened to You? Everyone has an amazing story to tell. It just takes the right questions to draw it out. Students pair up and interview each other using journalistic techniques.
  • What Does the Picture Say? Whether in the newspaper or in a picture book, photographs and illustrations speak to us. Using a series of pictures, students write their own children’s picture book and discover the fine art of pacing.
