Jan Goldberg

Author visits to elementary schools in various parts of the country are a joy for Chicago-area resident Jan Goldberg. Her deep-rooted love for the printed page goes all the way back to when she was a toddler. Regular visits to the book bindery where her grandfather worked produced a magic combination of sights and smells that she carries with her to this day.
After receiving a degree in elementary education, Jan was able to extend her love of reading and writing to her students. Today, she continues to teach by presenting writing workshops and classes to both teachers and children. In addition, she has been on staff for the past four years at the University of Chicago’s Writer’s Studio. Among the writing courses she created and taught was one called “Writing for Educational Markets.”

During the past 15 years, Jan has authored 60+ books and over 1,000 articles/projects. Her books include the following: "Perfectionism – What’s Bad About Being Too Good?", (co-authored with Miriam Adderholdt) named to the New York Public Library’s List of Books for the Teen Age for the Year 2000, "Green Berets", named by VOYA as one of the best nonfiction books for 2003, and "Careers in Journalism", now in its third edition (and also printed in two Chinese Language Editions.)

Additionally, Jan is the author of a variety of other educational works including chapter books, biographies, easy readers, young adult nonfiction, curriculum, testing materials, hi-low books, magazine articles, online articles, and poetry. Some of her publishers include Learning Resources, Zaner-Bloser, Scott Foresman, Capstone, Free Spirit, Rosen, McGraw Hill, Publications International, Riverside, Harcourt, ETS, Heinle, Discovery, The Gale Group, and Camp Fire Boys and Girls. Also, she recently authored a K-5 educational outreach project for the American Public Works Association. It includes a Student Handbook, an Instructor’s Guide, and a colorful easy reader called “Chipper’s Adventures in Public Works.”

As she tells all of her students – both young and mature, Jan is living her childhood dream.
