I learned long ago that boring school presentations make me cry. That’s bad. It scares the children.

I also learned that in 45 minutes, I can’t teach an audience of kids to become great readers or writers. That Herculean task falls to the heroes in the teaching trenches every day.

What I can do in my school presentations is share my enthusiasm, joy and passion for books. Oh yeah, and be very, VERY silly.

I want to get kids jazzed up about reading and writing by sharing my experiences as an author and as a reader. I tailor my presentations to each group and focus on ideas, revision, voice, my reader’s journey . . .

Virtual School Visits

I now offer virtual school visits using that magical series of tubes we call the Internets! Using a webcam, microphone, and a large cup of coffee, I bring students from the classroom into my office. Don’t worry. It’s a big office! Virtual visits combine audio, video, powerpoint, props and a heaping spoonful of silly to give kids a sneak peek into the world of an author.

I am a huge fan of the 6+1 Traits of Writing programs used in many schools. I offer presentations and writing workshops for K-5 on Ideas and Content, Sentence Fluency, Word Choice and Voice.
